Overview

Private Lamanai Temple & New River Safari

The adventure is in the journey. Lamanai (Submerged Crocodile) is one of the only Mayan sites you approach by boat—just like the ancient Maya did. This tour is 50% wildlife safari and 50% archaeology. You’ll speed down the New River lagoon, spotting crocodiles and spider monkeys, before docking at the foot of the massive jungle temples.

At A Glance

  • Destinations: Lamanai Archaeological Reserve & New River Lagoon
  • Departs From: Belize City
  • Duration: Full Day (Approx. 7 Hours)
  • Difficulty: Moderate (Boat ride + Hiking)

The Experience

Part 1: The River Safari

We drive north to the boat landing (Tower Hill). Here, you board a riverboat for a 26-mile journey up the New River.

  • Wildlife Spotting: Your captain is an expert at finding wildlife. Look for “Jesus Birds” (Jacanas) walking on lily pads, sunbathing crocodiles, and troops of Spider Monkeys swinging in the trees.

Part 2: The High Temple

We dock right at the jungle’s edge. A short hike takes you to the Mask Temple (famous for its huge stone faces) and the High Temple.

  • The View: Climb 108 feet to the top of the High Temple. The view of the river lagoon and the endless canopy is one of the most photographed in Belize.

The “Private” Difference: Why Upgrade?

The boat ride makes or breaks this tour:

  • Private Boat Options: While the boat is often shared (to keep costs reasonable), booking a private tour ensures your ground transport is exclusive, and we prioritize premium boat operators who focus on wildlife, not just speed.
  • Better Timing: We aim to get you on the water before the cruise ship rush.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will I see crocodiles?
We see crocodiles on about 80% of our trips, usually sunning themselves on the river banks. They are wild, so sightings are not guaranteed, but highly likely.

2. Is the boat ride rough?
No, the New River is a calm lagoon. The boat moves fast, so it can be breezy, but it is not bumpy like the ocean.

3. Can we climb the temples?
Yes! The High Temple at Lamanai allows visitors to climb to the very top. The view is spectacular.

4. Are there bathrooms?
Yes, there are clean restroom facilities at the boat landing and at the entrance to the Lamanai ruins.

5. Is this tour good for kids?
Kids love this tour because of the boat ride and the monkeys. It feels like a jungle adventure movie.

6. How loud are the Howler Monkeys?
Lamanai is famous for its resident Howler Monkeys. Their roar can be heard for miles—it sounds like a dinosaur/jaguar mix!

7. Is there a lot of walking?
There is moderate walking between the temples under the jungle shade. The ground is uneven (roots/dirt), so wear good shoes.
